can we have a dice bot for forum posts please?

Does this forum have a dice bot plugin we could get? As I have seen on many other forums, I ask this since I may want to run a play by post game on the forum instead of chat, with the option to sometimes use dice when the players or I feel like it, it would also enable some new fun games to be played on the forum, instead of requiring we (read me) have to restart our browser to maybe break into chat to roll there.

If this suggestion offends, delete the thread, I do not want to cause trouble.

This is something I would really like to have, but it appears that no such thing exists for Flarum. I’ve looked to see what other forums use, and it seems that it is fairly common to use a third-party site. For example, I see that on rpg.net they often use orokos.com for their dice rolls. Something like that is our only option until and unless someone ever creates a dice-roller extension for Flarum.

MyBB has a dice plugin where you type some bbcode and it does a roll when the post happens (parsing the roll code and adding results during parsing to the post and (and this is really overkill) saves the result in a separate database table so it can’t be edited kind of referencing it similar to how attachments used to be referenced here in older posts as in bracket attachment X close bracket.

If desired I can code up a php shim to insert in the parser to read dice rolls and convert them to actual output, but I don’t think we need to prevent editing the rolls. I may have to see if flarum has an api for installing such parser addons though.

Also it can probably be implemented as a simple shout box we can have showing somewhere on site (a very primitive form of chat) where we can have the php parse certain commands such as rolls without messing with the forum code and doing any plugin work. The server can then insert a bot line response. That will be a lot easier than writing a plugin. Though I don’t currently have a php webserver to run experiments on but I suppose I can set one up and do that. I am slightly rusty with coding php. It can also easily be done on client side if we choose to trust people and I think we can. a snipped of javascript can then be inserted to monitor for rolls and a new line following that and parse that line after it happens. But anyway will stop thinking about this for now as I don’t know if there is interest of me doing any code, I know the css snipped was very no for you guys last time and that is not even something that can do anything bad, javascript and php could theoretically do bad things, so why would you trust that from me if my css was not trusted 🙂 anyway let me know if you want help with that or not.

I thought I saw a Flarum extension where this dice emoji could be used as a dice roll. Specifically how it worked was that when someone clicks for a dice emoji, what shows up is a random dice number as the graphic itself, and that number would be used.

We are discussing whether this is something we can commission as an extension for ourselves. For aesthetics it’s preferred not to have a shout box or other widget added just for rolls, but to have them appear in line with posts only.

And thanks for the offer Vela, but we aren’t inclined to allow anyone here to make anything for us. That’s not good security.

As for the existing dice roller mentioned, it only uses 6 sided die, as far as I can tell. I have a feeling our RPG enthusiasts will want more options for dice rolls.

Yeah I have a dice roller I wrote for irc/mirc that does any dice from d2 to d256 and with various other features, but I have seen better ones too written in many languages, not that hard to adapt the code for one of those or write your own. I will not go read the api doc for flarum then, I did peek at it and there are easy things to plug into for extra parsing features for posting, should not at all be hard for someone who is trusted to write that if you have a trusted person who knows a bit of php.
