September prompts.

Welcome to a slightly new look. This is where contest entries will go. Once the poll closses at the end of the second month, they will be given the ‘fiction’ tag and it will be placed there.

With that out of the way, help me congratulate @LtBroccoli on winning the July/August contest.

Our new themes are given to us by @Tinman. His words are: ruin, flames lace.

We are going for 7k words. Also, as an added twist, this month, your stories must at least make reference to a character in another member’s story.

Question for clarification, can I use any character, from anybody’s story, or does it need to be a recognizable character?
I also intend to ask permission first, before using somebody else’s characters/toys

If anyone wants to use one of mine for the purposes of this contest, go ahead. I’m probably going to do another one in the Mindwalker series, but who knows what’ll come up.

I’m excited at the idea of someone using one of my characters. There’s a plot point I left open with Amber Richardson I haven’t explored yet due to writer’s block. The doctor is not too happy about his son being shot by her. Someone could explore that one. Or anyone can explore any other character of mine they like.

Probally will rule out most of anything I write, as I generally exclusively world build my own nations and countries per story. So would be hard to reference other writers worlds inside anything I write.

Derick One idea I had for doing the reference was having one of my characters reading a story or listening to a podcast or watching a movie based on another person’s character. They could be in the universe without being in the universe, if that makes sense. Like Megan could be reading a story about the demon Malachi from RapeU’s stories, or there was a news report about a Senator from Colorado that Shocker referenced in a previous story.

Yeah, that ultimately their are ways are doing it. The issue is with my picky reading habits finding a character I would want to even refer to.

Having the same problem. I had a character set to use from a story that is under DA’s account but because it was a collaboration between the two of us, he said it was still technically my story too, so I couldn’t use them.

Meh I do like the contests prompts so I might just write a story anyway and not bother entering it into the contests as having just a little external input. (The contests words) helps with the creative process. If a finish it and so inclined I can add a simple reference that is required if I’m so inclined but seriously those words just speak to my interests

One more question. What about using celebrities? For example, there’s a news story on in the background about how Somali pirates kidnapped and raped various celebrities. It references the “characters” from the story on the board, but mentions depictions of people used in the boards.

I’m probably overthinking this, but that’s what I do.

LtBroccoli My initial thought was original characters. Any of the pirates from @FearTheWrench story for example, preferably with permission.
