New contest prompts for March April 2023

Not that I know of. This one actually took a little more time to figure out than it appears. I muddled through several possibilities until I happened to stumble on the fact that there exists a play called The Crucible. From there the simple plot was born.

It also probably helps that I have a commute of about an hour to the school I teach at. So two hours of my day I’m driving and can think of some stuff in my head while listening to music.

RapeU just saves me the hassle of reading the play, as that play had been my first idea also. So when I saw your title I made the assumption you went that route.

It won’t bother me if you use the play idea. There’s multiple possibilities that exist in which an actress, a stagehand, or even a member of the audience watching the play could become the victim of unfortunate circumstances.

RapeU Don’t worry if I had fully committed to the idea I would have used it. At the end of the day that is why I have to refrain from reading your story or any other contest entries before posting my own. I don’t want to suspect myself of taking the excellent ideas of others and subconsciously put them in my stories, I’m a bit odd that way.
But now there are two stories I’m eager to read and can’t.

My submission is “One of Us”, a supernatural/sci-fi story. The prompts are used throughout the story, and the length according to Pages is 4099 words. It’s definitely a challenge to keep the word count so low.

So there are three words. Do we have to use all three words in the story or is that the subject of the story? How are the three words relative to what we are supposed to create. I totally get to 4100 word limit I just don’t understand how we are supposed to use those words in the story or make them the subject of the story? Sorry I’m blonde.

Gigi the idea is to use the concepts expressed by those words, not necessarily the words themselves. Further all three concepts need to be used in the story. Not entirely sure how strict @DarkArchon1980 is on checking for the use of them.
The gentleman who kicked off this kind of contest to websites ago, was fond of saying that he enjoyed seeing the concepts getting used as creative as possible, not sticking to the most literal meaning. I used to call this raping the concepts until they fit my story.

I mean you can totally cheat and just have a character comment on the graffiti on the wall saying “crucible, release, ascending” and then write whatever the fuck you want 🙂

Or you can not mention the words at all and write a story with the concepts in its very soul.

Also for the contest here all three prompts must be present in some form between those two or a combination of both 🙂

At least this is my understanding of this.

Sorry about my french, feel free to change fuck to ‘hell’ or ‘frack’ or ‘frell’ or some other word combo that expresses extremeness lol.

Yeah the words don’t necessarily have to be in the story. If they aren’t, then the idea of the word has to be in there.

For example, if one of the words was prison I could say something like “He turned the lock on the door and shut it behind him. The door clicked locked. He put the key in his pocket and strolled over to his prey. No windows were present in the room. It was his nightly ritual as a guard. Fuck them all one by one between the times he was supposed to be at the guard station.”

The word prison wasn’t in that paragraph, but the idea of a prison was and would thus count for the purposes of the contest if one of the words was prison.

@Gigi I’m not super strict. As long as a casual reader can see the words and are able to see the concepts represented it’s good enough.
