I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. I still felt like knives were piercing my insides, but for the moment I was grounded thanks to Izzy’s talk. “Thank you,” I said after our hug ended. “I have no idea what I would do without you.” Izzy smiled, “That’s what family does.”

He motioned to us with his finger to wait a moment. “Moon,” he barked. “Interesting.” He paused for a few moments. “A forest campsite?” Another pause. “More calls coming in?” The pause seemed like an eternity this time. Be ready for anything.” The final pause on the phone was shorter than the last one. “Understood.” Agent Moon hung up the phone.

The shouting in the camp began to die down. Murmurs still spread through the crowd. A hand raised from the bearded man quieted the crowd and he began to speak. “I thought I recognized you,” he said in an unusually calm voice. “We heard about the prison escape earlier. Called nonemergency and told the dispatcher we would stay put on site and keep an eye out. I still felt horrible mentally, but not to the point of breaking down anymore. “We’ll have to investigate who killed the brothers.” Agent Moon said, ignoring my near mental breakdown. “Not the way I would have wanted this to end. Would have preferred someone in law enforcement…” Agent Moon trailed off. Izzy and I shared a knowing look. A case where someone or a group of people killed escaped convicts who were in the sex trafficking business would be a nightmare to work, and even more of a nightmare to bring to a jury trial.

“You don’t mind if I sit that part of the investigation out do you?” Izzy asked. Agent Moon shook his head. “We don’t need either of you for that one. I’ll take care of it when the time comes.” Izzy and I shared a look again. We understood what Agent Moon meant. He wouldn’t poke around more than he had to.

“Well,” Izzy said “I guess our involvement is complete in this case.” Agent Moon shook his head. “We might still need your insight,” he informed us. “It’s unclear how the brothers escaped prison in the first place. We’re working on it though. You’re still welcome to assist if you like.” I yawned. “Sorry” I apologized. Agent Moon shook his head “No need. I get it. Adrenaline crash.” I nodded “I’m not sure how much help I could be about prison escapes. That’s not an area I’m familiar with,” I said. Izzy chimed in, “I’m not sure how I could help with that either, but thank you for the offer.” Agent Moon nodded, “I will be in touch if needed…”

sometime later

“They escaped and went to the house just like I planned.” An angry voice quietly raged where no one else could hear it. “But the bitch moved. How did I miss her moving?” The voice continued, “I should have just kept eyes on the house…no…no then I would have been seen…people would have gotten suspicious…” The owner of the voice paced back and forth in frustration. A fist slammed down on a table. An angry tear fell to the floor. The owner of the voice took a deep, calming breath.

“There was nothing I could have done differently. Stupid bitch just moved out of nowhere after staying in the same house for decades. Crazy how something simple like someone moving houses could derail an entire plan.” The voice grunted with rage and continued, “That teacher wasn’t supposed to be there. Why couldn’t that dumb bitch officer have been there instead?” The owner of the voice continued to pace back and forth and back and forth. “I need a new plan…” The pacing continued. “No, not entirely new. The beginning fell through but the rest is sound.” The voice no longer sounded angry and became unusually calm. “I just need someone else to take the fall.” The pacing continued faster and faster as the owner of the voice contemplated a strategic plan. “Who would take the fall? What is plausible?” The voice muttered unintelligibly for a while, thinking of who to blame for what was to come.

A snap of the fingers pierced the air. “I’ve got it! Blame the Mexican Cartel! Maybe even the Mexican Mafia! Both are always causing trouble with drugs and both are involved in human trafficking. They could be mad that one of their sources of income got thwarted by Officer Richardson twice. That’s going to take longer to set up, but it will be well worth it in the end.” The pacing stopped. The owner of the voice stood in front of a picture taped to the wall. “She took you from me,” the voice whispered to the picture. “I’ll take much more from her. And an underground criminal organization is the perfect cover story to make Officer Richardson along with all she loves disappear…forever…”
